We've Changed!

Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", June 1985, page 3

...and I hope that you will like what will be happening to Crown Jewels of the Wire in the coming months. Change does not signify dissatisfaction with the old, only movement forward into the future.

Everyone of us who has read an issue of this magazine during the past 16 years realizes the amount of time and dedication Dora Harned, her husband, Don, and members of their family have spent to make it the major contributing factor to the success of the insulator hobby. Out of this single magazine, other related interest areas have also been promoted...lightning rod balls and points, telephone and telegraph memorabilia, railroad items. It has not only served the insulator hobby well, but other collectibles as well.

To Dora we say "Thank You" and wish you the very best as you plan for your retirement years. Crown Jewels of the Wire has meant the survival and growth for a hobby that began with just a handful of collectors in the late 60's. You were a pioneer whose efforts will never be minimized or forgotten!

        into the future...

My name is Carol McDougald. I will be serving as Editor of Crown Jewels of the Wire. My husband, John, and I have been active in the insulator hobby for nearly 12 years. We have collected, bought and sold collections, served as officers of the National Insulator Association and hosted local insulator shows and the 1976 National Convention in Berea, Ohio. We love the hobby and the people associated with it!

Fearing a job transfer several years ago, we let our collection dwindle to about 100 special pieces. With that decision, we needed to develop other interest areas within the hobby. Since the purchase of Frank Miller's mould to continue his yearly NIA Convention commemorative, we have become intrigued with glass manufacturing and have produced subsequent insulator commemoratives. We formed Premier Images, Inc. which is a company that produces glass items as fund-raisers for a variety of organizations. Crown Jewels of the Wire will be a part of Premier Images, Inc.

Your Assistant Editor, Elaine Hamilton, has been responsible for developing my interest in the capabilities of the home computer. We both have identical hardware and printing units and live one mile from each other and our printer. We feel this is a real advantage and will minimize delays -- we will always have a backup for one another. All of the magazine will be typeset in our homes, making deadlines (hopefully) easily met. We look forward to working with your ideas on how to improve the magazine to fit the needs of its readers. NOW is your chance. Remember, CHANGE indicates movement forward into the future.

Mailing of the Magazine...

Crown Jewels of the Wire will be mailed the 1st day of each month.

FIRST CLASS SUBSCRIPTIONS will be stagger mailed over a three day period. This means that readers in California, New England, mid-America and around the corner will receive their issue at the same time. It will mean a little more effort on our part, but it will equalize the buying power throughout the hobby.

SECOND CLASS SUBSCRIPTIONS will be mailed on the 1st day of the each month, and will arrive anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks following posting. (This depends upon the whim of the U.S. Postal Service.) May we recommend that you consider upgrading your subscription at renewal time to First Class if you are interested in current advertising and show information.

Content of the Magazine...

Deadlines for materials to be printed in the magazine are as follows:

All Articles for Print 4 weeks before mailing
Advertising  3 weeks before mailing

We go to the printers by the 15th of each month.

We will continue to welcome diversification in the magazine with insulators being our major emphasis. Several new ideas are being planned as regular columns and we welcome willing contributors.

Advertising in the Magazine....

New options will be available in our Classified Pages. We will offer opportunities to select how your ads will look (even the 7 cent per word ads) and the interest area in which you want your ad to appear. (See inside of back cover for details.)

If you have ever said to yourself -- "Gee, I wish Crown Jewels of the Wire would do such and such, or print this or that, or ..." Now is the time to make your wishes known. We await your help as we begin this new venture together.

Good collecting,

Carol
